Horse Questions
Horse????? I'm a beginner rider in english and an intermediate in western. i'm looking for a horse that is atleast 15hh and can jump. I would like to show, but all the horses I can find are either green or can't jump. I would prefer to adopt, but if necessary, I would buy. Does anyone have any websites or anything?
Horse Management- How did you get into horses and where did you learn the necessities? A lot of people get into the horse business or horse ownership as a "family" thing. The generations before them had horses, and now they too own horses. I'm sure most of their knowledge comes from learning by hand. But some other people (like myself) do not get this opportunity. My grandparents owned horses, but my parents did not. So that "hands-on" learning that goes on for generations stopped. Right now I'm still in High School but plan on owning a horse or more in the future. I've taken equine science/management classes, and work with large animals like cattle (not that their care is alike!). And as weird as it sounds- I think I am going too far with learning and reasearch. So have you horse owners learned what you know from childhood, learned about the subject then got into horses, or just got horses and learned as you go?
How can I control a pushy companion horse? My horse is kept in a pasture with another horse (not mine - belongs to another boarder I've not met). This a very nice horse, but a pushy horse. It is often hard to get my horse out of the pasture gate because the other horse wants to follow. Any tips on how to get the companion horse to respect my space when catching my own horse?
How do I get my parents to buy me a horse? I have found a wonderful horse. My parents say that they know I am responsible, mature, and committed to owning a horse. Mom had said that she wanted to lease a horse first, so I get to bond with the horse and to see if the horse and I connect. Now she says we aren't going to, and she won't tell me why. She and dad said that we can afford a horse, and everything, but she still won't give. I have tons of horse experience- riding, training, and vet care. I have found an amazing place to board a horse, where we have to pay almost nothing- I just work off most of the board. I am getting certified in trimming and shoeing, so that gets rid of another cost. All my parents have to pay for is the initial cost of the horse which they said they could handle. Please help me!
What horse breed is best for first time horse owners? I have been working with horses for a few years and now I really want one of my own. I know all of the work and expenses that are included. I have been researching Friesians, I know expensive right, but I believe they are worth the money. Please any Friesian owners out there tell me about owning one first hand and if it would make a good first time horse?
How can i help my horse develope the right headset? I've been working with my horse on dressage for a while, just our little stuff we do inbetween the days that we're jumping. I've used draw reins on him to help him learn how i want his head to be, and how he should know when i want him ot tuck his head in, and arch up his neck. He does however, poke his nose out a lot, and then after a while he'll just lose everything. I've just recently started my friends horse on the same exact work, but her horse goes right into it, and holds it in the exact position, does it have to do with training, the horse, the bit? Is there something else i could do with my horse to teach him to bring his nose IN? I use a kimberwicke with him, i might be switching to a doulbe hinged kimberwicke with a copper roller.
How do horse owners protect themselves from being sued in Australia? for example - If a stranger walks behind or frightens horse and stranger gets hurt. Or if somebody is riding past your paddock and falls off when your horses bolt up to fence. Or if you are at a public place eg show and something unforseen happens and your horse causes injury and damage to people and property.
How can I take horse riding from a hobby to my life? I have decided to have a career in horses and go to a horse university,. I am 17 but have been rding for only three years. Besides majorly increasing my personal fitness, what else can I do to make my horse riding skills increase and start thinking of competing, and having lseeons at least twice a week? Aswell I will obviously increasing my horsemanship skills as hopefully I will be getting my own horse next halfway through next year during my gap year. Any tips, besides the fact that I will be poor forever? :) Thank you in adavnce for taking my question seriously.
What do you wish horse people knew about horses? I hate it when horse people don't even know what color their horse is in horse terms.. Brown is a horse with a black body and brown muzzle... etc. There is a difference between colt and filly.. If your talking about either one is a foal. Colt equals male.. they are not all colts. The truck and trailer doesn't judge the quality of the horse coming out of it. Respect for the people who train their own horse. Just because I ride western doesn't mean I'm a redneck or trash. What are things you wish the horse people out there know about horses!
How old should a horse be before you try Join Up? I'm going to be buying a young horse, and I'm very into Natural Horsemanship. The thing is, all horses that I've trained this way have been older, at least 5 years old. How old should a horse be before I try Join Up with them? Or does it matter? I don't want to confuse the horse by trying too soon, but I thought if you start the bond of trust sooner, the better. But I don't want to rush anything. Anyone know?
What type or size of horse for large framed beginer rider? Everyone in our family is 5'10 or taller and relatively hefty. The lightest of us is 220 lbs. We're interested in finally bringing a horse to our property but were worried we may be too 'giant'. None of us have any riding experience but our daughter is experienced in horse behavior and care and we have a friend willing to work with us over proper riding techniques and we have a trainer lined up for any horse we bring on. We're just wondering what breed of horses should we look for. Or if breed doesn't matter, what height or 'hands' should we look for? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.
How much time should I spend with my horse? I just bought my first horse, and she is being broke right now to ride and has already been ridden and is great with ground manners. I am a full time worker and was wondering how some of you fit time for your horse if you work an 8-5, and if it's bad if you only see your horse 2-3 times a week? Like many full time white collar workers I get the weekends off, and would be close to my horse so I may only be able to spend 1 or 2 horse twice a week during my work week, but all day on the 2 days I have off. Any suggestions? I just want my horse to feel loved and not hate me or forget her training because I'm not seeing her every single day. All suggestions and advice are greatly appreciated! Thanks.
How do you stop a horse just eatin leaves? My friend trains show jumping horses. Recently he has discovered his top horse wasn't eating at all. He figured it out after a while the horse had been eating nothing but leaves from a adjoining field. He wont eat anything now expect leaves and refuses a horses normal diet.He gets violent if you refuse him leaves. The vet says he wont last long but he's still with us.
How old does a shire horse have to be before it can be ridden? I once heard/read that horses need to be 5 years old before their bones are strong enough. I want to own a Shire horse someday and would like to know if they can be ridden earlier because they are stronger. I have always been curious about this. If you can give me websites or reccomend books on shire horses and horses in general(careing for them mostly)that would be great.
How do you train a horse to buck on command? I'm not looking at teaching the horse to throw the rider. The horse is very good natured and very willing to learn. If you fall off this horse, she will turn around and nudge you back on your feet and stand perfectly still as you get on, saddle or bareback. I've seen one other person train their horse like this but their method was rather cruel. I'm not trying to make her a "rodeo" bucking horse. Far from it. She already knows a few simple tricks like laying down and kneeling. I want to train her to give straight-line bucks, no longer then 10 or 15 seconds. Any longer and it could hurt her. The object is to stay on and get the hardest bucks without being thrown. This is nothing but another trick for her.
How much does it cost to have a horse trailered from California to Colorado? My old horse trainer bought my horse off of my before I moved from San Diego to Denver. She still hasn't paid me the money she owes me for the horse, so I'm going to take her back (it was in our contract that if at any time before I got paid I wanted the horse back, she would have to give her up without any trouble). I moved during summer, and I still don't have my money, so I want the horse. How much would it cost to have a horse trailered from San Diego to Denver?
What can a horse trainer compete in at a horse show? Does anyone know of a website that lists the classes that a horse instructor/trainer can ride in at horse shows? I know that trainers can only ride in certain classes because they are at a higher level than other riders and it deems it "unfair" and "unfit" for a trainer to compete in a class against riders that are on the same level as their students. I'm trying to find out a definite as to what classes a trainer is allowed to ride in without causing problems. Thanks!
What is a good horse insurance company and how much does it cost to insure a horse.? I am interested in insuring my horse and was wondering if there was a specific company I should use and about how much it would cost. I live in So Cal, so I would need a company that covers that area. My horse is 16, a Warmblood gelding, and I use him for pleasure and am starting to learn dressage on him. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
How to stay on horse when cantering and galloping? I have been riding horses since June. When I canter my trainer tells me that I need to sqeeze with my legs in order to stay on. I am fine until the horse starts going a little too fast for me. I have read that you are only supposed to sqeeze when you want to go faster. Am I confusing the horse and making her speed up by trying to sqeeze or am I supposed to do that? I am confused, I just want to know how to stay on comfortably without getting all discombobulated (sp?)! Thanks!
How do I go about getting my horse from the lady I bought it from? I have a bill of sale and on the bill it says the horse it paid for and that I could leave the horse their as long as I wanted to free of charge. She has been their for about 5 months while I have been building my barn and stuff. Now I want to get here but the lady says I owe here $2,000 board fee. I have already given here $500 for food when I bought the horse. How can I get the horse back without having to pay more money. She told me the horse could stay for free. What do I do?
How to get a horse used to traffic? I would like to know how to train a horse so it does not spook at traffic, cars driving by, etc. I know how to do basic desensitization, but beyond that I am at a loss. There are many amish families in my area and they drive their horse and buggies down the highway; semi trucks do not even startle the horses, how is this possible? Please explain.
How do you stop a runaway horse? I was just wondering what you'd have to do to stop such a horse. I saw one recently and the rider was screaming and shouting for help and the horse was just bolting towards on-coming traffic as fast as it could and I've no idea what happened because horse and rider were out of sight in no time at all. So, how would a runaway horse be stopped?
How much the cost for leasing a horse in Maryland? I'm looking for leasing a horse in Maryland. Actually I have the riding lessons at my horseback riding club and they have a indoor/outdoor facility, it is pretty clean and nice place. They offered to me $425 for half lease per month (3 times riding in per week), but it seems kind expensive. Off course, depends on that horse's level and other condition, but I think that horse is not really special (10 years old, TB, schooling level, little bit hunter/dressage) How much is the reasonable price for leasing horse at riding club?
How can I get my horse to loose more weight? My horse is a little to chubby! I dont want to over work her but I would like her to be skinnier. I also want her to be able to go out to pasture with all the other horses. She is 15.2 hands and is a registered quarter horse. How many pounds should she be?
How do I get my horse to pass by other horses? So I don't have a fenced-in area or room for a fenced-in area at my house, so I ride down dirt roads near my house. There is a small farm near my house that has two horses in the front pasture. My horse can usually go by one way without calling them out or stopping, but on the way back, she calls to them then goes up to the fence and won't turn around to go home. When I ask her to move she usually picks up her front legs and pivots around on her hindquarters. It takes a long time to get her to do what I want her to do and it gets really frustrating.
Whats the difference between overtaking a learner driver and a horse? My question is not a joke. How do you overtake a horse?.....Pass slow and wide with minimal noise and disturbance for the horse. This is the realistic answer, correct? Drivers have respect for the horses and riders because the horse may spook and cause and accident, correct? So, the point of the question is now as follows..... Why dont people treat learners with the same amount of respect and courtesy? If a learner driver gets spooked are they not a danger? Could they not steer erratically or brake to stop suddenly and unpredictably, thus causing a crash? It is impossible to stop a learner from braking harshly in a situation of panic! So, why do people allow themselves to antagonise and intimidate the learners? Why drive so close? Why overtake dangerously? Why sound the horn if they stall? You wouldn't to a horse would you? Or would you? Think about it. (I am NOT having a dig at horse riders at all, just painting a picture and creating a scenario)
How do I know what breed of horse is right for me? We are looking to buy land in the future and I will be purchasing two horses. I dont think I could handle breaking a horse. I have some experience but not years and years. I only want them for pleasure horses, no working. I would also like them to be sociable with other horses. Any suggestions?
How often should you feed your horse and give water for him to drink? My dad has a horse we keep in our backyard inside a stable. He insists on putting a bucket of water in front of him in the morning to allow him to drink until he stops, then puts his food out and brings the bucket back in. We used to leave the bucket in the stall but our horse kicks it down and causes a nasty mess everywhere. At night we do the same thing. Water at first, then food. I just wanted to confirm with someone who knows better that this is the right thing to do to maintain a livestock horse. Thank you
How can I convince my parents that getting a horse is important? I love horses and have forever i have been riding for 4 years and have wanted a horse.. now that im almost old enough to drive i want to take the next step and get a horse. money is not the problem it the fact that my parents dont think im dedecated enough and they just dont want to buy a horse. what can i do to convince them of my love of horses and how much i realy want one and the benifits of riding?
Horse trainers: How long would it take to accomplish the following with a smart and willing horse? (English)? Teach him to stand still when mounted. Teach him to stand still on concrete while being groomed. (He likes to walk all over the place.) Teach him to not freak out when he's being sprayed (Show Sheen, fly spray, etc.) Teach him to get on the bit nicely every time. (He CAN do it and does sometimes). Teach him to pick up his feet. (He's willing about 75% of the time and once his feet are up, he stands nicely, but sometimes he flat refuses.) How many hours of training would this horse need and what would you charge to accomplish this? I know there are a lot of variables here, but give me your best estimate. Should a professional horse trainer guarantee her work? Note: We just bought the horse about 3 weeks ago. He's a really good and sweet boy, but he hasn't been ridden or even handled much in about a year. He's getting a lot better at each of these issues as my daughter is working with him. Thanks for all of your answers.
What are the main reasons to shoe a horse? I am just curious, but what are the main reasons why you would shoe your horse. All three of our horses are barefoot, but we live in an area where there is minimal gravel and such, which is why I would think shoeing would be necessary. But other people in the barn shoe their horses. Would it be because of showing? What are the main reasons why people shoe horses and is it really necessary? I always heard barefoot is the best if possible. But I'm still curious. Yep, we have a 4 yr old Appy/Mustang/Curly mix and his hooves are like rocks we've been told. They said he should never have to be shod. Also, as an added question, if you are riding on pavement, such as parades or just road riding, is it still necessary to be shod or just more recommended for added comfort? Thanks for all the answers :)
What does a horse purchasing contract include? I am purchasing a horse from overseas. I want to have a vet check for soundness before the horse goes to quarantine where he will be tested for general equine viruses by the government vet. The purchasing contract the seller sent me is weak, and of course doesn't cover any of my interests. Please tell me what should be included in my purchasing agreement.
My horse has osteoarthiritis and degenerative joint disease, what can I do? My horse has been diagnosed with mild osteoarthiritis and degenerative joint disease in his right stifle. The vet recommended additional screening at a surgical clinic and starting him on bute and cosequin ASU. I need to call the vet and get further clarification on her recommendations. Does anyone have experience with this, and had any luck with supplements, remedies, shots that helped. Will I be able to ride him again? He is an 18 year old thoroughbred. thanks!
What kind of insurance for a horse boarding stable? I have a riding stable with 5 of my own horses. A friend is boarding her daughter's pony here. Board covers the bare minimum of costs and the family helps with barn work. There is a demand for boarding in our area and I have had numerous requests. What kind of insurance do I need if I want to take on boarders? Also, what kind of insurance do I need if I allow boarders to also ride my horses? Our one boarder wants to work with a trainer using my horse as she is rapidly outgrowing her pony. The daughter is 14 years old and a very fine rider. I want to make sure everyone is protected and no problems occur if someone gets hurt on my property.
Horse people! How long did it take to find your first horse? What type of horse were you looking for? We are looking for a young hunter / jumper prospect for my daughter and every time one doesn't work out she gets sad. Like every parent I hate seeing her unhappy. I just want an idea on the average time it takes to find a decent horse. My daughter is 17 years old, and just shy of 6 feet tall. She has been showing in hunter / jumper classes for 6 years, first on school horses and recently on a lease horse. Diego (her current mount) is a charming and beautiful but challenging Appendix Quater horse. My daughter is a great rider and she has awesome horse sense. As well she has earned and saved $3000. of her own money. She is able to and derserving of a great horse.
